Southall (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Lyn, founder of Southall Food Bank, has been honored in community awards for her vital efforts in tackling food insecurity and supporting local residents.
Lyn Hutchinson, an A2Dominion customer, accepted the award for her contribution as a Community Champion.
How is this Southall food bank tackling food insecurity?
The first Community Impact Awards were presented by the G15, an association of the biggest housing associations in London, to honor locals who go above and beyond to change the world.
At the Havelock Community Center in Southall, 70-year-old Lyn established a much-needed food hub for families.
After ten years of volunteering in the community, the devoted grandma saw that residents were having difficulty as a result of increases in the cost of living.
Since then, she has encouraged others to volunteer the time to assist in managing the hub because she wants to solve the problem.
Lyn said:
“It gives me a warm feeling inside, knowing I am helping people.
It is heartbreaking sometimes seeing parents come in. The look on their faces when they know they are going to be able to feed their family that night. That makes the hard work worth it”.
For their initiative, each winner was given a certificate and a community award; Lyn was given £1,000. A panel consisting of members of the housing association shortlisted candidates for the award.
Another community organization that assists A2Dominion clients was one of the nominees.
Emma Bayou started Mindfulness in Ealing and Hounslow in 2022, offering guidance to around 600 parents and caregivers and helping kids with mental health issues.
How has the Southall Food Bank impacted the local community?
The food bank ensures that families and individuals experiencing financial difficulties have access to meals by offering vital support. This is important in places where food insecurity and poverty are prevalent.
By uniting volunteers, nearby companies, and locals, the food bank promotes a feeling of community. This partnership promotes community engagement in tackling hunger-related issues and fosters social relationships.
By providing residents with nutrient-dense, well-balanced food alternatives, the food bank encourages better eating practices. This emphasis on nutrition aids in the fight against diet-related illnesses that are common in low-income areas.
In times of crisis, such as economic downturns or public health problems, the food bank is essential since it helps people in need right away.
