Italy, (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Situated in the heart of Sardinia, is a place where age really is just a number. Seulo is a little Italian village that has long been categorized as a blue zone due to the fact that its people don’t seem to age the way most of us do. They live longer, look younger and are happier.
Seulo is trapped beneath mountains and hills, inland, away from the coast. The salty Mediterranean air still floats its way deep into the jagged cliffs of a landscape that isn’t often associated with Italy, specifically Sardinia. Its tucked away from the polluted city, and off the beaten path, away from crowds of tourists. Seulo is littered with pine trees, cool, freshwater rivers, and an abundance of natural wildlife. It provides the perfect setting for a ‘Back to the basics’ lifestyle.
Of a village population of around 600 people, 8 are currently aged 100 or above. Which has begged the answer to the question, ‘Why do people who are from Suelo live so long?’despite the fact that the occupants of Seulo claim that they have no secrets.
However, there are some habits which the people of Seulofollow that seem to be the reason why they live so long. The people of Seulo locally grow their produce. If they can grow it, then they will eat it. They thrive off consuming good quality olive oil and wine produced from locally grown grapes and olives of the region. Their diets consist of fresh fruit and vegetables and locally farmed proteins.
The people of Suelo live with the slow living mantra in mind. They eat slowly, they stroll slowly, and they stress less. They don’t do mainstream exercise. Instead, their workout consists of walking around the village through the quiet cobblestone streets and chatting to the neighbors they meet along the way. They also work in their gardens every day, aiming to stay active as they age. For more rigorous exercise, the woods surrounding the village offer a welcome change of scenery and easy walking trails.
Another common aspect of life in Seulo is the emphasis on quality time and interaction with others. As well as focusing on things that they find bring them eternal happiness. They only engage in activities which add value to their life rather than subtract from it.
Seulo isn’t the only blue zone whereby inhabitants live longer. These include, the island of Okinawa in Japan, Lomo Linda in California, Nicoya in Costa Rica, and Icaria, a Greek island. However, Seulo has the most centenarians in the world.
The people of Seulo seem to live a simple life, filled with great company, good food and consistent exercise.
