Croydon (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Major gas works will close key roads in South Croydon for three weeks, with drivers urged to plan ahead as traffic diversions and delays are expected.

Due to gas mains construction, Southbridge Road, the busy A236 that connects South End and Bramley Hill to the Croydon Flyover, will be closed to traffic for nearly three weeks in November.

While gas piping contractors replace the old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes, Aberdeen Road, which connects South Croydon‘s St Peter’s Road to the South End high street, will also be blocked.

With the work on Aberdeen Road starting on October 27 and ending on November 2, the closures are spaced out.

November 3 to November 20 is when Southbridge Road will be closed. The day after the RAC London to Brighton veteran car run, which takes place every year on November 2, that closure will start.

Gas network engineers SGN have advised residents of the road closures.

“This work is essential to make sure you and your neighbours continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply,”

SGN said. There is no anticipation of an interruption in gas supplies to businesses and homes during the works.

According to SGN, roads and pavements will be dug up, and Aberdeen Road and Southbridge Road “will be closed to through traffic… a signposted diversion will be in place for vehicles, approved by the local authority”.

The following bus routes may be impacted by the closure of Aberdeen Road: 119, 312, 466, 405, 60, and 166. Before departing, bus passengers should consult TfL’s journey planner website.

Contact the company’s customer service department at 0800 912 1700 or send an email to sgn.co.uk with any inquiries regarding the SGN works in South Croydon.

Which bus routes will be diverted and their temporary stops?

Due to the closure of Aberdeen Road, routes 119, 312, 466, 405, 60, and 166 will be diverted.

Closure of Southbridge Road (A236) will impact a number of bus routes that use this main road, though undisclosed route numbers are included in this notice.

Around the Aberdeen Road closure, buses will operate temporary stops on adjoining roads which may include St Peter’s Road and South End, and will be spaced to be as close as possible to regular stops.

For the Southbridge Road closure, buses which would normally travel on the closed road section will be diverted to nearby main roads ready to be identified later, such as Croydon Flyover, Bramley Hill and parts of the A232, to maintain connectivity as much as possible and to avoid the closed road sections.
