UK (Parliament Politics Magazine) – The British government has launched an official TikTok account despite maintaining a ban on the app for official devices due to security concerns since 2023.

Downing Street confirmed that the official TikTok account was granted a security exemption.

Why has the UK government launched a TikTok account despite the ban?

The UK government retains its ban on TikTok for official devices, even as ministers create an official profile on the social media platform.

As reported by The Independent, the government set up the “ukgov” TikTok account, featuring public service updates like passport renewal notices and details of Labour’s “Plan for Change.”

Number 10 clarified that a security exemption was granted for the government’s TikTok account but highlighted that the prohibition on using the app on government-issued devices remains unchanged.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman stated,

“In line with security advice, we’ve been permitted the use of a UK Government TikTok account… under specific circumstances.”

Sir Keir’s administration has launched a TikTok account to strengthen UK-China relations, recognizing China as a major player in trade and investment for Britain.

What did Number 10 say about the TikTok account?

The Prime Minister’s representative highlighted the government’s ongoing review of its communication strategies to ensure effective public engagement. They stressed that social media remains an essential tool for informing the public about government services and improvements in the lives of working individuals.

When asked about the ban on using TikTok on official gadgets, the spokesperson confirmed that there have been no modifications to the existing ban due to security policy.

In response to an inquiry about whether certain mobile devices are designated for TikTok usage, the spokesperson declined to comment.

What kind of content is UKGov posting on TikTok?

Videos on the official TikTok account of the British government include reminders for travellers to review visa regulations and keep their passports updated.

The top video on the official TikTok profile shows the Labour’s initiative to raise living standards, reduce NHS waiting times, and construct more homes.

The account has gained around 350 followers and 12,000 views.

How is the UK strengthening diplomatic ties with China?

As TikTok is a Chinese-owned platform, it is believed that creating an official TikTok account is an attempt to build closer ties. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is ready to meet his Chinese counterpart to negotiate important bilateral concerns.

China’s Foreign Affairs Minister will arrive in London on Thursday, February 13, before attending the Munich Security Conference.

However, the Labour government faces backlash for approving a proposal for a Chinese embassy in London. The application for the new embassy was submitted by Jinping’s administration when Keir Starmer took office last July. Last week, protests were also held to oppose the government’s approval, with more than 1,000 residents and politicians participating to raise their voices.

How many countries have banned the TikTok app?

Around 16 countries have banned TikTok due to security reasons, including India, Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, the UK (for official devices), Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, and Latvia.
