Ukraine’s recent sinking of the Russian patrol ship “Sergei Kotov” on Tuesday marks the third attack on a Black Sea Fleet vessel in the past five weeks, according to the UK’s Ministry of Defence. This ongoing trend of assaults is significantly impacting Russia’s naval operations around Crimea, constraining the Black Sea Fleet’s maneuverability.
The “Sergei Kotov,” commissioned into the Black Sea Fleet in July 2022, was reportedly attacked by Ukrainian naval drones. This vessel had previously sustained minor damage from unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) in July and September 2023 but had returned to service each time.
The recent losses have led to significant changes within the Russian naval hierarchy, including the dismissal of Black Sea Fleet Commander Admiral Viktor Sokolov on February 15, 2024. The UK Ministry of Defence’s update underscores Ukraine’s continued efforts to limit the Russian Navy’s operational freedom in the Black Sea, reflecting the increasing pressure on Russia’s maritime forces.
