Wandsworth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Wandsworth residents are invited to celebrate National Fitness Day with free activities at leisure centres and venues across the borough this September.

The topic for this year’s National Fitness Day is “Powered by you!” and it falls on Wednesday, September 24. It seeks to emphasize how each of us may contribute to living a better, more active life.

According to research, just 22 minutes a day of moderate exercise can help counteract the harmful consequences of prolonged sitting.

You will feel warmer, breathe more quickly, and your heart rate will increase with moderate exercise. If you can still converse but not sing, that’s a sign that you’re operating at a moderate intensity level.

Frequent exercise has been shown to lower stress, enhance mental well-being, and increase energy levels.

This September, it’s easier than ever to move more with a range of free activities in leisure centres and other venues across the borough. Whether you’re a seasoned gym-goer or just starting out, there’s something for everyone, from open gym sessions and fitness classes to tennis socials and junior sports.

Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “National Fitness Day is a brilliant opportunity to try something new, get moving, and connect with your community.

We’re proud to support this initiative and encourage everyone to take part, whether it’s a gym session, a game of padel, family tennis or just walking or running a little more, enjoying our award-winning parks in the process.”

Highlights include:

  • A five-day free membership for any sport or leisure centre in the borough
  • Cardio tennis at Wandsworth Common, Tooting Common or Leader’s Gardens
  • High-energy fitness classes like HIIT, bootcamp, and pump workouts
  • Activities for over 50s across the borough, including tone and stretch
  • Live Karma Yoga will be running a free Mindful Movement Class every Wednesday and a Chair Yoga Class

The borough’s larger Wandsworth Moves Together initiative, which attempts to increase physical activity’s accessibility and inclusivity for all, includes all of the free and open activities. Additionally, it highlights the Council’s Access for All program, which provides flexible and reasonably priced methods to get active.

What free activities are scheduled at Balham Leisure Centre this September?

The Leisure Centre provides free memberships to people with a WAND Card, which includes foster carers, people receiving free school meals, asylum seekers, Universal Credit claimants, and care leavers, for free access to the swimming pool, gym and play zone for children under 8.

Residents can access a variety of exercise classes, mainly free or discounted for eligible groups, including general fitness, strength sessions for all abilities, and aerobic classes.

There is free swimming or heavily subsidized swimming lessons, along with open swimming times for all ages, to encourage fitness and water safety for all ages.
