Chelsea close to £50m Kai Havertz transfer boost

Chelsea want to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea are desperate to bring Kai Havertz to the club this summer to add to the deals for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner they have already concluded. Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen his squad and close the gap on the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.

Havertz is understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge and to link up with Timo Werner and Antonio Rudiger in particular.

The 21-year-old has been impressive this season, netting 17 times and providing nine assists in all competitions.

Bayer Leverkusen want a massive £90million for their prized asset with Chelsea prepared to pay closer to £70m.

But they could be boosted by £50m as it looks more and more likely they will qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Blues have leapfrogged Leicester into third this week as Frank Lampard’s side keep picking up points since the Premier League restart.

Chelsea have a unique opportunity to sign Havertz this summer with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid not in a financial position to compete because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A £50m boost to the transfer budget could be key if Marina Granovskaia is to complete a deal for the midfielder, say the Telegraph.

But Lampard also knows he will have to raise further funds if he wants to bring in Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell on top of Havertz.

The Blues could also look to bring in a goalkeeper and a central defender but that could depend on what happens in regards to Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future at the club.

Chelsea also still hope to extend Willian’s stay with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Craig Burley thinks Havertz would be a good signing and has urged Lampard to wrap up a deal for the midfielder.

“You can’t have enough good players,” he said.

“It would be a statement of intent to go out and get one of Europes most exciting young talents.

“It does fit with the narrative that Chelsea and Lampard are going down.

“They are looking to sign younger players with sell-on value but who can also produce the goods now.

“If they get Werner, he can play wide or through the middle. Havertz is flexible as well. They may be a little top-heavy, in terms of their forward line.

“But it would be a statement from [Roman] Abramovich to say, ‘weve given you Werner and we also want Havertz, one of the brightest talents in European football’.”

Chelsea return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on Sheffield United in the Premier League (5.30pm).
