Early life & Bio
Clive Betts was born on 13 January 1950 in Sheffield. He completed his schooling at Longley School in Sheffield and King Edward VII School. After completing his school he got admission to Sheffield and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He received a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Politics with good grades. In 1969, he got the chance to join the Labor party.
Apart from that he became a part of the Trades Union Congress in 1971. He worked as an economist for a few years after getting appointed at Derbyshire County Council. Clive wanted to become a part of the Labor party in the Burngreave Ward in 1975. It turned out to be a successful ride for him. He got elected in the Firth Park ward in the 1976 city council election. Moreover, he was re-elected for this position in 1980, 1984, and 1988. As the councilor of Sheffield City, he started working as the chairman of the Housing Committee for six years. In 1974, Clive stood for the elections to the House of Commons. He represented himself as the Labor party candidate. However, he was defeated by the incumbent John Osborn. He was later elected to the safe Labour seat of Sheffield Attercliffe. When veteran Labour MP Patrick Duffy retired he took over the position successfully. The general election in 1992 turned out to be favorable for him. He got elected by a large majority.
Government Career
Clive Betts started his career at the Government after making an opposition whip under Tony Blair in 1996. However, he was later promoted to full whip and given the title of Lord Commissioner to the Treasury. After a few years, he dropped out of the Government. Clive has enjoyed plenty of positions in the Government. He currently sits on the Finance Committee, Panel of Chairs, and National Policy Statements Sub-Committee. Clive Betts lives in a farmhouse on the Derbyshire border. He and his partner James Thomas are spending a good time together. James is working as his parliamentary assistant. Apart from that Clive likes to play cricket and is a supporter of Sheffield Wednesday F.C. In the past, he has played squash and Football as his hobby. Moreover, he has been a regular runner at the Sheffield Marathon. In 2021, he became a trustee of the green space charity Fields.
