A BRIT beautician who was paralyzed after falling 60ft from a balcony on holiday has returned home.
Maddi Neale-Shankster, 21, is finally back in the UK, weeks after the horror that unfolded in Thailand on New Years Eve.
Maddi Neale-Shankster returned home to Coventry after a fall in Thailand left her paralyzed.
The 21-year-old’s family and friends have rallied around her to raise money to bring her home
The beautician was left paralyzed from the waist down after breaking her back, suffering two collapsed lungs and having ribs piercing her liver in the fall.
MailOnline reported that Maddi fell from a 60ft balcony and was left stranded in a foreign hospital after her insurance company refused to pay the bill.
But her family and friends managed to band together and raise £75,000 to bring the 21-year-old back from the island of Ko Pha-Ngan.
Speaking to the BBC last week, her mother Karen Moseley-Neale said: “Before the accident I was on FaceTime with Maddi. An hour later we got a phone call from her partner and all I could hear was Maddi screaming in the background and the sirens sounding.
“Since the fall, we are now faced with the realization that Maddi may never walk again.”
His family organized a fundraiser which they say was used to cover “all hospitalization, repatriation and transport costs to the UK“.
He has now raised £76,000 for the 21-year-old from Coventry.
Karen warned others to check their insurance cover carefully, adding: “Maddi has taken out holiday insurance in Thailand for 10,000 baht (£247).
“She thought it was £10,000…I would hate for anyone to be in that position.”
When Maddi’s GoFundMe page reached its goal, her family wrote, “Today we wanted to let everyone know that we have reached our goal and now have more than enough to cover all the hospitalization, repatriation and transport costs to the United Kingdom.
“We have decided to disable donations for this reason.
“If you still wanted to help directly, there are several fundraisers in Coventry that will go towards Maddi’s rehabilitation and help with her living expenses until she is hopefully able to walk and to return to work.
“Again, we can’t thank you all so much for your generosity, we really didn’t expect it to happen so quickly and we will be forever grateful.”
