London (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Thousands of people have called on the UK government to begin work on getting back into the European Union.

Britain quit the bloc, which includes 27 other nations, following the Brexit Referendum in 2016.

As reported by Cambridge News, Now a petition to Parliament has been marked by more than 7,600 people calling for the government to try to re-join the EU.

More than 120 individuals from Cambridgeshire are among those to add their representations to the petition. These contain 19 people from the Cambridge constituency, nine from South Cambridgeshire and 29 from St Neots and Mid-Cambridgeshire. Elsewhere in the county, it has been marked by 21 people in Huntingdon, 19 in Ely and East Cambridgeshire, 16 in North West Cambridgeshire, six in North East Cambridgeshire and seven in Peterborough.

What benefits do petitioners see in rejoining the EU?

The petition states: “I believe joining the EU would strengthen the economy, increase global influence, improve cooperation and provide stability & freedom. I believe that Brexit hasn’t brought any discernible benefit and there is no prospect of any, that the UK has altered its mind and that this should be recognised.

“I think the Single Market would bring inward investment, frictionless trade and economic development benefiting industry and consumers alike. Full membership could also strengthen the UK’s voice on the global stage, allowing it to impact EU policy and regulations, including trade, security and environment. Joining the EU could provide access to science & research schemes and give UK citizens the right to live, work & study across member states, enriching cultural exchange & personal opportunities.”

Generally, any petition to Parliament that gets 10,000 signatures is responded to. Any that reaches more than 100,000 signatures must be regarded for debate in Parliament by the Petitions Committee.
