UK (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Merlin Strategy poll shows just 15% trust Tories to stop Channel crossings, with 35% backing Reform UK; 63% say the Conservative Party is broken.

As reported by The Telegraph, a recent poll finds that Conservatives lack public trust to end illegal Channel crossings.

What did the latest poll reveal about public trust in the Tories to stop channel crossings?

A Merlin Strategy poll shows voters trust Reform UK and Labour more than the Tories to tackle illegal Channel crossings, dealing a blow to Kemi Badenoch’s party.

The survey, released ahead of the Conservatives’ Manchester conference, showed voters doubt the Tories can bounce back to win the upcoming election.

Under Sir Keir Starmer’s government, small boat arrivals have surged to record levels, while thousands also crossed during the previous Tory administration.

Despite former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s flagship “stop the boats” policy, over 50,000 migrants arrived in the UK by small boat.

A survey of 2,000 British adults asked which party they trusted most to stop illegal Channel crossings. It shows 35% of respondents backed Reform, 18% chose Labour, 17% none of the above, and 15% supported the Tories.

When Ms Badenoch became opposition leader last November, she admitted the Conservatives “got it wrong” on immigration. The party oversaw nearly one million migrants in the year to May 2023.

The rise in migration followed Brexit-era visa easing by ex-PM Boris Johnson, critics labeling it the “Boriswave.”

The first year of Ms. Badenoch’s Tory leadership has been overshadowed as Reform rises and Nigel Farage’s party gains momentum.

The Tories average 17% in polls, 14 points behind Reform and three behind Labour, with projections suggesting they could win just 45 seats.

A Merlin Strategy survey shows 63% of Britons see the Conservatives as broken and unable to recover for the next election. About 30% of voters planning to back the Conservatives still believe the party is unlikely to regain strength in time for the upcoming election.

According to the survey, Reform holds a 61% to 39% advantage over the Tories in the chances of winning the upcoming election.

The poll shows that 41% believe a leadership change would have no effect, 37% expect improvement, and 9% predict worse results.

A survey of 2024 Conservative voters shows 45% favour a new leader for better results, 32% expect no change, and 8% anticipate worse outcomes.

Which party could take control in the next election?

A new YouGov survey shows that Reform UK is projected to win 311 seats, just 15 short of a majority, gaining 40 since June. Labour is expected to drop to 144 seats, losing 34 since June and 267 since 2024.

Conservatives are likely to secure only 45 seats, a further decline from 2024. Other parties include Liberal Democrats with 78 seats, SNP 37, Greens 7, Plaid Cymru 6, and others 3 seats.

Survey about Keir Starmer’s leadership

The Survation poll for LabourList surveyed 1,254 Labour members. 3% of Labour members want a new leader, while 31% back Keir Starmer

64% say Mr Starmer governed “badly” and 35% say “well.” 65% feel Labour is heading in the “wrong direction” versus 26% who say “right.”
