Hackney (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Lidl is set to open in Stamford Hill, Hackney, early next year, bringing new retail options and jobs to the community, amid growing demand for discount stores.

When Sainsbury’s left in February, there were questions about the unit’s future, and Caroline Woodley, the mayor of Hackney, had to confirm that it would continue to be a supermarket.

The 1,021m2 space at the intersection of Stamford Hill and Amhurst Park in Hackney is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation after a successful planning application. With plenty of space for vehicles and bikes as well as an in-store bakery, this will be the fourth location in Lidl’s Hackney portfolio.

Approximately 40 new employment, including many client assistance positions, will also be created by the development. The hiring campaign follows Lidl’s announcement that it will pay workers inside the M25 £14.35 per hour.

Joe Loydon, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said:

“We’ve seen demand for our products continue to rise across the capital and are excited to serve even more communities. We’re sure residents will rejoice to learn that the fit-out works are underway and we’re a step closer to bringing our much-loved products to Stamford Hill.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us in our journey so far, we can’t wait to welcome you through our doors which are on track to open early next year.”

When the lease ended, the landlord wanted to renovate the property, so Sainsbury’s closed its Stamford Hill location. It came after Clapton Common, a local Asda store, closed its doors in 2022 after the firm decided it was no longer profitable.

After years of conjecture and planning delays, Lidl has announced plans to open on Lower Clapton Road as well, taking advantage of the closures. The grocery business has submitted plans to demolish the old JET service station and construct a 1,000 square meter, two-story structure.

According to documents, obliteration will commence this month and continue through December. Reconstruction is anticipated to start in early to mid-2026, while the exact date is still unknown.

Will the new Lidl create local job opportunities and hiring details?

The new Lidl store in Stamford Hill is anticipated to create job openings, generally including  places similar as store managers, cashiers, directors, and logistics staff. Lidl’s recent expansions across the UK have generated hundreds of new jobs in new stores and distribution centers.

For illustration, Lidl’s investments in storehouse systems in London and Leeds are set to  create over 500 new jobs. In addition, Lidl stores generally offer competitive hourly stipend above the  public living wage and career progression openings within the company.

Communities can anticipate that the Stamford Hill Lidl will follow suit with job creation aimed at hiring from the girding area, contributing to employment openings with benefits similar as fair pay, training, and career development pathways.

Hiring details and reclamation drives for the new Stamford Hill store are anticipated near to the opening date, typically including online operations through Lidl’s career gate and in store reclamation notices.
