Lambeth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – A man has been charged with murder after a pensioner died in Streatham, Lambeth, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

On May 16, police were summoned to Woodbourne Avenue in Streatham. They were reacting to news of the death of 81-year-old Robert Hill.

At the time, Mr. Hill’s death was not regarded as suspicious. But as fresh material surfaced, further research was done, and a murder inquiry was started.

On Thursday, October 23, David Souttar, 22, of Clapham’s Chelsham Road, was charged with murder. He was remanded into custody after making an appearance at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Friday, October 24. On Tuesday, October 28, he will make his appearance at Lambeth‘s Old Bailey.

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, who leads policing in Lambeth said:

“Detectives from the Met continue to investigate Robert’s sad death earlier this year.

I understand that this update may be a concern to those in the local area, please do speak with your local neighbourhood team who are there to support you.

We would also like to ask the public for help, as we have been unable to identify Robert’s next of kin. If you knew Robert, or are a family member then please do come forward.

This is devastating news, which is why we would like to speak with you and offer our support. The investigation and enquiries into the circumstances of Robert’s death remain ongoing.”

In response to the recent murder in Streatham, police have maintained a strong presence through the Safer Neighbourhoods brigades, fastening on community safety and crime  forestallment. 

The police emphasize community engagement and have open channels for residents to communicate precedences and issues directly to officers. Despite some enterprises about police coffers being stretched due to platoon relocations, officers remain committed to securing neighborhoods and erecting trust. 

Community leaders and residents express mixed passions, with some upset that reduced police presence offsite could hinder responses, while others appreciate ongoing dialogue. Original politicians call for corroborated localized policing to attack adding crime and insure residents feel safer on the thoroughfares.
