PYONGYANG, June 18 (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of leader Kim Jong Un, issued a sharp rebuke on Thursday against the recent G7 call for the denuclearisation of North Korea. According to state media outlet KCNA, she characterized the international demand as a direct violation of the nation’s constitution and an infringement upon its sovereignty.
This diplomatic friction follows a joint statement issued by G7 leaders on Wednesday. In their communique, the leaders expressed deep concern over North Korea’s ongoing nuclear and ballistic missile programs, urging Pyongyang to adhere to established United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Stance on Nuclear Disarmament
Kim Yo Jong stated that the debate regarding the country’s nuclear disarmament is effectively over. She described the pursuit of denuclearisation as an irreversibly finalised agenda that remains entirely disconnected from the reality of the nation’s current security posture.
The statement emphasized that the possession of nuclear weapons is a core national interest for Pyongyang. Kim characterized this policy as a line of no retreat that can never be crossed under any circumstances. She further argued that these weapons serve as a vital, self-defensive deterrent, which the regime claims was acquired specifically in response to persistent nuclear threats from external enemies.
“Denuclearisation is the line of no retreat that can never be crossed,” Kim was quoted as saying, adding that anyone who tried to hurt the core interests of a nuclear weapons state would be making the worst option of inviting disaster.
Calls From The G7
The reaction from Pyongyang occurred shortly after the conclusion of the G7 summit. In addition to their demands regarding nuclear disarmament, the G7 leaders addressed several other points of contention.
The group pressed North Korea to resolve the long-standing issue concerning the abduction of Japanese citizens. Furthermore, the leaders called for coordinated international efforts to curb North Korea’s involvement in cryptocurrency thefts and other forms of global cybercrime.
These demands reflect a broader effort by G7 nations to address what they perceive as destabilizing activities emanating from the Korean Peninsula. However, the regime in Pyongyang maintains that its nuclear capabilities are a cornerstone for ensuring regional peace, dismissing international criticism as an outdated approach that will not alter its strategic trajectory.
Expansion Plans
The diplomatic disagreement coincides with efforts by the North Korean government to cement its identity as a permanent nuclear power. Earlier this month, Kim Jong Un conducted an inspection of an operational nuclear material facility. During the visit, he articulated plans to increase the nation’s weapon stockpile at an exponential rate.
Pyongyang has taken steps to solidify this status by embedding its nuclear policy directly into the state constitution. This legislative move is intended to formalize the country’s position, signaling to the international community that the government does not intend to revisit the possibility of disarmament.
