Bexley (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Bexley Council has installed 285 new bins and upgraded more than 350 existing ones in a major initiative to reduce litter and improve public cleanliness.
The upgrades are a component of a plan by the London Borough of Bexley to combat littering and maintain clean public areas.
There are now more and better bins at popular bus stops, school zones, park entrances, and shopping centers.
Cllr Richard Diment, cabinet member for places, said:
“Keeping Bexley clean and green is a top priority for the council and we’ve always been clear that we have zero tolerance of littering. We want Bexley to be a safer, greener place to live in and an attractive place for visitors and businesses to thrive.
By increasing the overall number of bins in our borough significantly and investing in more modern ones that enable people to recycle, we’re making it easier for everyone to dispose of their litter as well as increasing recycling.
There is no excuse for littering and we will continue to come down hard on those who damage our local areas by doing this.”
The Smartbins are a tailored solution for typical types of public trash and are designed to reduce street clutter.
Additionally, the council has warned locals that fly-tipping, dog fouling, and littering are illegal in public areas.
Offenders may be given fixed penalty notices of up to £300 on the spot.
The project is a component of Bexley’s broader endeavors to make the city cleaner and greener for businesses, residents, and tourists.
How will the bin upgrade help Bexley reduce litter and improve cleanliness?
The improvement lessens the possibility of bins overflowing, which is a frequent reason why rubbish spills into streets and public areas, by enabling people to request new bins and select bin sizes that better suit their household waste volumes.
Recycling becomes simpler and more user-friendly when there are fewer wheeled bins instead of several recycling boxes, which promotes greater participation and lowers contamination. As a result, more garbage is appropriately confined and recycled instead of being disposed of inappropriately.
By making sure that bins are emptied often enough to avoid overflow and related litter issues, Bexley maintains a high reliability rate in garbage collection (99.9%).
The council’s strategy is in line with best practices for public litter bins, which include placing bins in busy places, even if it is mostly focused on household trash.
