Bexley (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Bexley Council has raised fly-tipping fines as officers work with the Met Police and Environment Agency to curb the rising environmental crime across the borough.
A number of automobiles suspected of being involved in fly-tipping offenses have been impounded. The first auto, a white Volkswagen, was allowed to have dumped rubbish in Foots Cray Meadow without authorization.
On Westwood Lane in Welling, the alternate auto, a white Mercedes Sprinter with the license plate KV61 WPZ was sequestered. At fly-tipping spots throughout the city, further than 70 new signs have been installed.
The maximum fixed penalty notice was raised from £400 to £1,000 as part of stricter punishments. Large-scale rubbish deposits in the borough have resulted in the issuance of four £1,000 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) to businesses.
More than 132 fixed penalty letters worth £200, £500, or £1000 have been sent to residential premises, individuals, or businesses in Bexley so far this year for illegally fly-tipping their trash. These modifications were implemented this week in conjunction with the ‘Fly-Tipping Fortnight’ announcement by Keep Britain Tidy.
This is a nationwide effort to increase public awareness and address the issue of rogue “white van” operators who unlawfully dump waste in streets, lay-bys, and green areas after luring locals with low-cost garbage disposal offers on social media.
The council advises you to always hire a registered waste carrier when hiring someone to remove your trash because failing to do so could result in fines. The Environment Agency’s website has information regarding authorized garbage haulers.
Councillor Richard Diment, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
“We will not tolerate any form of fly-tipping in this borough and those caught dumping waste can expect to be prosecuted and fined. Along with more joint operations with the police to target illegal waste carriers we need local people to work with us to keep our borough clean and free of rubbish.
I hope these new fly tipping signs will make it easier for residents to report incidents and that along with higher fines and increased enforcement activity we can put an end to this criminal behaviour which only serves to blight our community.”
