A negative progress score doesn’t mean pupils didn’t improve or that the school failed.

It simply demonstrates that pupils at that school did not advance as much as other students in England who began with comparable outcomes.

Students who received a positive score advanced more than those who started from similar beginning points, while those who received a negative score advanced less.

A-Level grades in the UK range from A (best) to E (worst pass), with U denoting ungraded.

An A* is awarded for exceptional effort. Passes with grades A through E can assist pupils get into college, apprenticeships, or employment.

Exam results and occasionally coursework are used to determine grades.

Results Day determines whether or not many students receive the grades required for their UCAS university offers.

How does the latest DfE data reflect college performance in Croydon?

Following an Ofsted inspection rating Croydon College as “Inadequate” overall (early 2023), senior leaders have implemented a detailed quality improvement plan focused on curriculum, quality, and student support.

Leadership and governance have been strengthened to better steer the college toward improvement, but progress remains in early stages requiring faster and more focused action.

The 16-18 year old student achievement was extremely poor at the Coulsdon campus in 2021/22, but in-year data forecasts significant recovery for 2022/23. Attendance and punctuality have marginally improved but remain lower than desired, especially at Coulsdon, highlighting the need for comprehensive strategies to sustain improvement.
