Barnet (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Police in Edgware launch a speeding crackdown following growing concerns from local Barnet residents over road safety and reckless driving incidents.

Following local residents’ concerns regarding driving offenses in the area, police officers from the Centenary, Edgware, and Kenton East wards conducted a road traffic operation in Camrose Avenue, Edgware, this week.

The site was chosen because of what police claim is an increasing concern for road safety, and the operation was started in response to persistent complaints.

Colleagues from nearby wards joined the officers, who utilized specialized technology to identify and apprehend those who were exceeding the speed limit.

To control speeding and other traffic infractions, local governments and law enforcement agencies frequently employ traffic enforcement cameras and community-led projects.

To lessen speeding, the implementation of Intelligent Speed Assistance technology in buses, which is already in place in other areas of London, should be investigated.

In response to local concerns, Barnet police could conduct more similar operations throughout the region with the goal of improving road safety and discouraging reckless driving.

What additional measures are being considered to address speeding in the area?

Particularly in residential areas, speed bumps and speed cushions work well to lower vehicle speeds. Speed cushions are appropriate for locations with high emergency services traffic because they enable emergency vehicles to pass without slowing down.

Crosswalks can be used to demarcate pedestrian zones and slow down traffic at busy intersections.

By rerouting traffic along circular roads, which inherently lower speed, roundabouts and traffic circles can be used to slow down traffic.

By making the route more winding, narrowing or rerouting it can also help lower speeds.

Vehicles equipped with ISA technology can automatically set speed limits in response to traffic circumstances and posted speed limits.

Chronic speeders can be effectively managed by using technology to track and report speeding.

Communities can successfully lower speeding road safety by combining these strategies.
