How have past accidents shaped safety measures on Wigan Road?

Wigan Road has witnessed multiple serious collisions in recent years, including a 2024 fatality involving a motorcyclist and a lorry.

Data from Greater Manchester Police’s road safety unit shows the stretch near Cricketers Way records above-average accidents due to its dual carriageway layout and proximity to industrial estates. Campaigners have long called for speed cameras and improved lighting, citing poor visibility at night.

In 2025, council engineers installed chicanes further west, but the crash site remained unmodified. Inspector Peel emphasised ongoing reviews of high-risk routes post-incident.
