Hammersmith and Fulham (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Hammersmith & Fulham Trading Standards officers have seized 12,263 illegal vapes worth over £106,000 since 2021, marking a major escalation in enforcement efforts.

Nearly £24,000 worth of illegal vapes were seized in the last seven months alone, according to the local enforcement team, which claims a dramatic increase in seizures.

The message to merchants is plain, according to Doug Love of Hammersmith and Fulham Trading Standards: follow the law or risk action. Teams will keep an eye on stores and take out illicit merchandise, he said. The council presents the activity as a potentially hazardous or overly forceful public safety precaution.

There is a broader national crackdown in tandem with the local activity.

Selling single‑use disposable vapes became an explicit violation on 1 June, aiming at decreasing trash and environmental impact; repeat offences carry high fines. The legal implications for merchants can include prosecution, closure orders of up to three months when sales are judged likely to provoke antisocial activity, and the potential loss of premises licences.

According to Rachael Herbert, director of the National Crime Agency, depriving criminals of money from illegal sales lessens their ability to commit new crimes and helps safeguard respectable high-street establishments.

Campaigners and environmental organizations have also highlighted the negative effects of throwaway vapes on the environment. According to studies quoted by recycling organization Material Focus, over 5 million single-use vapes are thrown away every week in the UK, many of which include chemicals like lead.

While some retailers have been sluggish to make the conversion, H&F Trading Standards has urged shopkeepers to fully shift to refillable and rechargeable devices when permitted. According to the council, it would keep up its enforcement efforts and gather more information about repeat offenders.

Some store owners contend that small businesses that are still recuperating from broader economic difficulties may be burdened by the expense and supply issues of legal, compliant alternatives. Parents and community organizations have applauded the seizures as an essential measure to shield children and public areas from the environmental and health hazards that unlicensed items bring.

Residents are encouraged to contact Hammersmith & Fulham Trading Standards if they have information regarding illicit sales.

How seized vapes are disposed of or destroyed by authorities?

Authorities generally dispose of or destroy seized vapes through controlled incineration at artificial waste installations. For illustration, in Monroe County, New York, seized disposable vapes are packed into sword cans and transported to a large incinerator in Arkansas, where they’re burned to ash.

Disposal involves sorting to reclaim removable batteries independently, while disposables and other factors are incinerated. The process is expensive and labor- ferocious, but considered necessary to keep poisonous vaping waste out of tips, waterways, and sewers.

Seized vapes are destroyed substantially by incineration at specialized artificial waste installations, with preventative separation of dangerous factors like lithium batteries, to minimize environmental and safety hazards.
