Havering (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Havering Museum’s manager calls on local residents to support the conservation and protection of the borough’s heritage amid growing preservation concerns.

11 conservation areas in Havering have been identified due to their unique architectural or historic significance.

In an effort to maintain these exceptional orders, consultations are currently taking place around the region.

Havering Museum Volunteer Manager Ann Young is holding the Council’s Romford Conservation Area Consultation Document.

Ann, a volunteer herself, told the Havering Daily: “The Museum has a vested interest in the preservation and enhancement of Romford. We are therefore pleased to be able to support the Council’s consultation by hosting documents relating to the consultation exercise here in the Museum.”

Through artifacts and exhibits, the Havering Museum narrates the history of Havering. Its priceless collection is on display in the ancient Brewery Buildings’ Sports and Social Club, located at 19–21 High Street, Romford. These structures add to Romford’s distinctive and particular character and are listed locally.

The Golden Lion, a public house that is still often visited, is located on the historic cross roads from which the town extends in four directions. Its closest prominent neighbors are The Woolpack, The Bitter End (originally the White Hart), and The Golden Lion.

This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of the Havering Museum, a well-liked tourist destination.

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, invited guests are invited to a special joint anniversary event with the Friends of Havering Museum, which is also commemorating its 25th anniversary.

Romford, Rainham, and Gidea Park are the three distinct Conservation Areas that are included in the Council’s Conservation Area Exercise. You can examine and comment on all of the documents online at www.havering.gov.uk/consultation. Comments must be submitted by June 9, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

What specific heritage sites does the museum aim to protect in Havering?

The Havering Museum has a strong commitment to preserving and safeguarding the borough’s many historical resources. The museum collaborates with community organizations and local government to preserve and promote architecturally, historically, and culturally significant locations across Havering.

The conservation activities of the Havering Museum are concentrated in Romford. The museum actively promotes the preservation of the Romford Conservation Area and is located in a locally listed building in the historic center of Romford.

This includes the Market Place, the old Brewery Buildings, and historic pubs like The Golden Lion and The Woolpack, all of which together capture the town’s distinct personality and past.
