Lambeth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Lambeth council expands OurBike scheme with four new locations, offering cargo bikes for community use through its Big Shift program and Peddle my Wheels.

An alternative to cars or vans is provided by the community cargo bike sharing program OurBike. Through the OurBike app, locals and businesses may rent electric cargo bikes for mid-range trips like shopping, taking their children to the park, or delivering goods to clients in the area.

Peddle My Wheels provides free training that can be customized for the routes new users intend to take if they are unfamiliar with cargo bikes.

What are the key features of the new cargo bikes introduced by Lambeth council?

The cargo bikes are electric-powered, providing users with help while pedaling. This feature improves accessibility for a wider range of users by making it simpler to move larger loads and traverse mountainous terrain.

Residents and nearby companies can rent the bikes on an hourly basis through the OurBike community cargo bike share program. By encouraging shared use, this concept lessens the need for private property and supports environmentally friendly transportation.

For 75p per 15 minutes, users can rent the cargo bikes; new users get the first hour free. Because of its pricing structure, it’s an affordable option for quick journeys like shopping or product delivery.

Lambeth’s dedication to lowering vehicle emissions and encouraging active transport is in line with the launch of these cargo bikes. It helps towards the overall goals of reducing air pollution and increasing traffic in the borough.

The cargo bikes are designed for all kinds of usage, including local deliveries, shopping trips, and family get-togethers. They are suitable for both personal and professional use because they are versatile.

What are the new host locations for the cargo bikes?

Local organizations that host the bikes assist with maintenance by keeping the tires inflated and the battery charged. The following are the new host locations:

  • Oasis Hub, Kennington Road, SE1 7QP
  • Bon Velo, Norwood Road, SE27 9DJ
  • Hope Church Vauxhall, Tyers Street, SE11 5HS
  • Stockwell Park Community Centre, Aytoun Place, SW9 0TE

There are now 10 OurBikes in total thanks to the inclusion of four new stations

Residents can identify the closest available bike to rent by downloading the OurBike app. New businesses can receive 180 minutes for free, while new residents can join up for 60 minutes for free.

Deputy leader Cllr Rezina Chowdhury, cabinet member for Sustainable Lambeth and Clean Air, said:

“Since Our Bike launched in Lambeth, we have seen more residents and businesses use the bikes to transport goods and move around the borough without needing a motor vehicle.

We are now adding six additional Our Bikes for even more people to use. It contributes a huge amount to our mission to reduce vehicle emissions, cut down on road danger and make transport in Lambeth far more active while continuing to support local businesses. We are clear in our commitment to reduce overall vehicle journeys in Lambeth, and we are supporting our residents and businesses to make the transition to more active forms of travel a bit easier and that work for everyone.”
