Lord Cameron resigns as Rishi Sunak announces interim shadow cabinet
David Cameron has stepped down from Rishi Sunak’s frontbench as the Conservatives introduced an interim shadow ministerial team in preparation for a party leadership contest. The party announced that Lord Cameron, the former foreign secretary, and Richard Holden, who led the Tories during the unsuccessful election campaign, had resigned from Sunak’s senior team. Andrew Mitchell, who previously held the largely ceremonial role of deputy foreign secretary, will now serve as shadow foreign secretary. Sunak remains the leader of the opposition until a new leader is elected, with Jeremy Hunt and James Cleverly continuing as shadow chancellor and shadow home secretary, respectively. Oliver Dowden will continue as Sunak’s deputy.
