Starmer and Swinney Meet, Downplay Independence
Sir Keir Starmer met with Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, to discuss various issues. When questioned by broadcasters, both leaders indicated that Scottish independence was not a major topic of their talks. Despite the SNP losing most of their seats last week, they maintain that the 2021 Holyrood results still mandate their pursuit of independence from the UK. Sir Keir, whose party has gained significant ground in Scotland, aims to secure an even stronger mandate in the 2026 Holyrood election.
Regarding today’s discussions, Sir Keir refrained from providing specific details but emphasized their ability to “work constructively together.” He reiterated his commitment to delivering for Scotland and expressed his intention to strengthen relations with the first and deputy first ministers. While acknowledging clear differences on constitutional issues, Sir Keir described the meeting as constructive.
