Liverpool receive major Premier League title boost after UEFA make strong recommendation

The 55 member associations held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the future of the current season with the game suspended due to COVID-19.

A variety of options were discussed regarding future fixtures and the calendar being changed.

And Liverpool fans will be delighted to hear there was a strong recommendation that seasons should be finished if at all possible.

Part of the statement read: “There was a strong recommendation given to finish domestic top division and cup competitions, but some special cases will be heard once guidelines concerning participation to European competitions – in case of a cancelled league – have been developed.”

Any decisions on what was discussed will be announced on Thursday after the UEFA Executive Committee meet.

UEFA also reiterated their commitment to meeting the payments to member associations as planned despite the lack of football.

Liverpool were just two wins away from the Premier League title when coronavirus put a halt to the top flight.

The Reds are looking to lift the trophy for the first time since 1990.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has talked about the mentality of the current Liverpool players.

“They just seem to be getting better and stronger every single year,” he explained.

“I think the one key thing that has blown me away from when I played, what they seem to have now is mental strength across the board.

“We used to have some really good professionals and mentally strong players in our squad but now it seems that from No.1 in the squad to player 26, mentally theyre all monsters and are all on the same page.

“To have a squad that has that mentality, Im really excited to watch them in the coming years because I think they have a fantastic opportunity to become a really successful Liverpool team, and thats what we all want as Liverpool fans.

“Theyve been phenomenal for a few years now. I thought they were very unlucky last year not to be champions.

“That was just down to how good Man City were.”

Klopps side have won 27 of their 29 Premier League games to build up a commanding lead of 25 points over Manchester City at the top of the table.

Liverpool will be desperate to wrap up the title if the season is able to continue in the coming weeks and months.

Jordan Henderson may end up having to lift the trophy at an empty Anfield though with football likely to return behind closed doors.

Liverpool star Andy Robertson has also explained what life in lockdown is like for a footballer.

“We get our own programmes that the fitness team have been giving out,” Robertson said.

During a video call with a volunteer from the LFC Foundation, Robertson was asked how his team-mates are keeping.

“They’re good, they’re good. We’ve been in contact a lot,” he said.

“We’ve been FaceTiming each other and we’ve been on conference calls with us and all the staff doing yoga and bike sessions.

“It’s not like seeing them every day and you miss them a lot.

“Hopefully we get to see each other soon.”
