Bio & Early Life

Mhairi Black was born on 12th September 1994. She completed her education at Lourdes Secondary School, Glasgow, and the University of Glasgow. Being a bright student she was given the award of a first-class honors degree. As she had an interest in Politics and Public policy her studies helped her gain a lot of new insight. She has not yet given her final exam in Scottish politics and remains to be an undergraduate. Before entering into politics Mhairi worked at a fish and chip shop to earn some money. Mhairi is 28 years old currently.

Political Career

Mhairi became a Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire South. In 2015 she was an undergraduate student at the University of Glasgow. After defeating Douglas Alexander, she became a Labour MP and Shadow Foreign Secretary. Moreover, her unexpected popularity helped her get re-elected many times. Although everyone knew she is the youngest MP that didn’t stop her from showing her skills. Due to some changes in the political system, the age of candidacy starts from 18 years. This is why she could easily get a position under this provision.

In July 2015, Mhairi got appointed to the Work and Pensions Select Committee. She made an inspiring speech but got a lot of criticism from the Government’s approach. Her other political inspirations include Keir Hardie and Margo MacDonald. Moreover, she is a critic of Universal credit released by the Conservative Government. The delay in payments has been a problem and was bringing negative side effects. This is why she remained critical of how payments should be given on time.  In one of her statements, she revealed that: Government is a “pious loan shark – except that instead of coming through your front door they are coming after your mental health, your physical well-being, your stability, your sense of security – that is what the experience is for all of our constituents”.

Mhairi has kept a certain level of political thought and sentiment that she doesn’t want to change. She openly supported same-sex marriage much before the referendum in Ireland. Moreover, she is herself a lesbian and doesn’t shy away from saying it openly. Mhairi Black got married to her female partner Katie at a private ceremony in Pollokshields Burgh Hall, Glasgow.
