Croydon (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Ofsted inspectors praised The Minster Junior School in Croydon for “exemplary” pupil behaviour and personal growth in a vibrant, caring school community.

As reported by Your Local Guardian, on February 4 and 5, 2025, Ofsted paid a visit to the Croydon school, which is located on Warrington Road. In accordance with section 5 of the Education Act of 2005, this was the school’s first comprehensive inspection.

Overall, the Minster Junior School was deemed to be good, with exceptional ratings for both personal growth and behavior and attitudes.

Both management and leadership skills as well as educational quality received good grades.

Students “enjoy school and are proud members of the Minster community,” according to inspectors. The school’s “CALM code,” which helps make sure that staff and students understand the requirements around respect, honesty, and compassion, was cited as evidence of the exceptional behavior.

During social times, students were seen to play joyfully together and to be nice and considerate of one another. Students informed inspectors that they feel secure at school and that they may confide in responsible adults if they have any concerns.

The school’s efforts to support students’ overall growth were characterized as comprehensive.

Students take advantage of a variety of activities and experiences in addition to the academic program, such as leadership positions as eco-council members, sports leaders, and religious ambassadors, as well as art and sports competitions and educational visits.

Inspectors discovered that students “rise to these expectations” and that “the school has high expectations for pupils’ achievement.”

They characterized the students as focused, industrious, and serious learners who are ready for the next stage of their study.

With the executive headteacher, trust, and governing board having “a shared vision to provide pupils with the best possible education,” the school’s leadership was commended.

Inspectors observed that the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education multi-academy trust actively supports and challenges the school, which is reflective and aware of its strengths and opportunities for improvement.

With the help of successful adaptations, students with special educational needs and/or disabilities were able to access the same curriculum as their peers, demonstrating the program’s ambition and inclusivity.

Employees received recognition for their professional growth as well as for promptly recognizing and meeting the needs of the students.

Although the curriculum was usually good, inspectors found that in certain topics, it was often difficult to identify the essential knowledge and skills that students needed to gain.

Learning may be less concentrated in some areas, and activities may present students with too much knowledge at once.

Inspectors said:

“The school should ensure that the curriculum clearly identifies the crucial learning and supports pupils in remembering what they have been taught.”

Teachers frequently assess their students’ comprehension, especially when the desired learning is well-defined.

Inspectors discovered that in certain areas, instructional strategies may be improved even more to help students’ comprehension over time.

The Minster Junior School places a strong emphasis on reading, with a curriculum designed to help students improve their reading abilities via the use of excellent literature.

Additional phonics instruction is provided to students who require it, and books are carefully chosen based on reading proficiency.

Inspectors did point out that, in a few instances, the method of teaching reading might be more narrowly targeted in order to enhance students’ memory and fluency development.

Inspectors discovered that, thanks to strict inspection and prompt action when necessary, attendance is gradually increasing.

It was said that the personal development provisions were good. Students demonstrate strong character, act with kindness and maturity, and learn to respect and value differences.

In addition to participating in a wide range of clubs that cover topics like music, food, debate, arts and crafts, and board games, they receive instruction on emotions, relationships, health, and well-being.

What specific initiatives contribute to the personal development at the Minster Junior School?

The institution offers exceptional experiences that enhance students’ comprehension of moral and spiritual principles.

The school places a high value on creating a caring atmosphere where students feel secure and know who to ask for help when they’re worried, boosting their self-esteem and abilities.

An inclusive learning environment is produced by the school’s implementation of clear recognition and sanctioning procedures, efficient routines, and a culture based on values like kindness, service, optimism, wisdom, and resilience.

In order to get kids moving, foster teamwork, and encourage healthy lifestyles, the school provides a wide range of sports, clubs, and workshops. To encourage inclusivity and skill development, the school also hosts competitions for all students, including those with special education needs.
