The Princess of Wales has announced that she is undergoing treatment following a cancer diagnosis. In a video statement, Catherine described the diagnosis as a “huge shock” after what she called an “incredibly tough couple of months,” but she offered a positive update, stating, “I am well and getting stronger every day.”

While specific details about the cancer have not been disclosed, Kensington Palace remains confident that the princess will make a full recovery. Catherine explained that cancer was discovered following an abdominal surgery she had in January. At the time of the surgery, it was unknown that cancer was present. Subsequent tests revealed the cancer, leading her medical team to recommend preventative chemotherapy, which she began in late February.

The palace has decided not to share further private medical details, including the type of cancer involved. In her video statement, Catherine extended her thoughts to others affected by cancer, urging them not to lose faith or hope.

Recovery from her January surgery had been slow, and Catherine emphasized the importance of reassuring her family. “William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” she said. She added that it had taken time to explain the situation to their children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—in an appropriate manner, and the family now needs “some time, space, and privacy.”

The King and Queen were informed of Catherine’s health prior to the announcement. King Charles has also been undergoing treatment for cancer. Catherine and the King were briefly treated at the London Clinic at the same time, though their treatments were for different conditions. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said the King is “so proud of Catherine for her courage” and has remained closely in touch with her throughout the past weeks.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expressed their support, wishing Catherine and her family “health and healing” and hoping they could maintain privacy during this time. Catherine and Prince William are not expected to participate in the Royal Family’s Easter Sunday events, and the princess will not return to official duties soon.

There has been intense public speculation and media frenzy about Catherine’s health since her January operation, with no official events attended since Christmas. In her video statement, Catherine spoke of the support from her family and the public, saying, “Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance. As is the love, support, and kindness that has been shown by so many of you.”

The video was filmed on Wednesday by BBC Studios, and BBC News was briefed by Kensington Palace about the announcement. Calls for privacy have been growing following speculation and conspiracy theories about the royal couple. This intensified after a photo agency withdrew a photograph of the princess for Mother’s Day due to concerns about digital alterations, which the princess later apologized for.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised Catherine’s “tremendous bravery” and urged privacy for her treatment and family time. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer expressed his support, noting the added stress of the diagnosis amid intense media speculation. US President Joe Biden also extended his thoughts and prayers for Catherine’s recovery.

Oncologist Professor Pat Price commended the princess for her openness, noting that her announcement could encourage others to seek medical checks and speak about their own experiences with cancer.
