Immigration is one of the most controversial political issues in the UK over a long period of time. Over time, different political parties have taken a variety of positions on immigration and how to handle it. And amongst all of these parties, Reform UK is arguably the most outspoken and believes the most things with respect to immigration. But the question that is most often asked about them is, is Reform UK really against immigration, or is the picture more complex?

In this article we will explore reform of UK immigration policy and the rationale behind this policy position. We will show how critics and supporters see it, and we will demonstrate whether the party is entirely against immigration or just interested in reform.

Understanding Reform UK

Reform UK is a newer political party that describes itself as a successor to the Brexit Party, which was first established in 2019. The Brexit Party, initiated by Nigel Farage, had a very successful campaign for Britain to exit the European Union. After the completion of Brexit, the Brexit Party said that it was changing the name of the party to Reform UK, with an expanding political agenda. This ‘broader’ mission includes reforming key areas such as economics, governance, taxation, and even immigration. In terms of immigration, it is embedded in the party’s plan, as they believe it is fundamental to national security, cultural identity, and a level playing field in the economy.

Why Immigration Is a Central Issue for Reform UK

Over the last several decades, UK immigration has increased quite a bit. Rising legal and illegal immigration has increased arguments about integration, healthcare, jobs, and housing. Amendment UK feels the present immigration policy is flawed and is not advancing British people. Among the primary causes Reform UK gives immigration priority are:

  1. Public Worries: Many British people are concerned about how population increase worries them about public services, including housing, schools, and the NHS.
  2. Economic Pressure: Uncontrolled immigration may impact earnings and job possibilities for British people, according to Reform UK.
  3. Border Security: The party emphasizes illicit immigration and tiny boat crossings on the English Channel as proof of inadequate border security.
  4. National Identity: Rapid immigration can have an impact on British traditions and cultural values. Reform UK highlights this point.

Official Reform UK Stance on Immigration

Reform UK does not claim to totally oppose immigration. The party contends instead that immigration should be regulated, selective, and advantageous to the UK. Their policies call for a points-based system similar to Australia’s model, in which immigrants are admitted depending on skills, qualifications, and economic contribution.

Reform UK’s immigration policy has a number of important aspects:

1. Strong Border Controls: The party wants stronger action to combat illegal immigration, including improved coastal patrols, deportation of illegal entrants, and agreements with other nations to accept back any migrants.

2. Immigration based on skill: Particularly in areas like healthcare, engineering, and technology where shortages exist, Reform UK claims it supports immigrants who can contribute value to the UK economy.

3. Ending Mass, Low-Skilled Immigration: Ending what they term “mass immigration” of low-skilled workers is one of their strongest policies. They contend this puts pressure on salaries, transportation, and housing.

4. Prioritizing British Citizens: The party holds that British employees should always be first. Instead of depending on low-cost foreign labor, companies should be urged to recruit and educate British nationals.

5. Cultural Integration: Reform UK also emphasizes that immigrants should honor British customs, laws, and traditions. They claim that social harmony depends on integration.

Is Reform UK really opposed to immigration?

Many people wonder this. Reform UK speaks very forcefully, especially when discussing small boat crossings or unauthorized immigration. This causes some detractors to allege the party is “anti-immigration.” In examining their policies, we see they are not outright against immigration, only wanting to change the immigration system so people can immigrate without the UK having the headaches that it has to deal with now.

  1. Against Illegal Immigration: The party is firmly against people crossing borders without consent.
  2. Selective Legal Immigration: The party is supportive of legal immigration if it is in the best interests of the UK’s economy and society.
  3. Less People: Reform UK wants to reduce the number of immigrants, especially in lower-skilled numbers.

So I think it is fair to say that Reform UK isn’t necessarily against immigration, but they are against uncontrolled, mass immigration.

How Reform UK Supporters View the Policy

Supporters of Reform UK see their quality immigration policy as being realistic and needed; they have argued that:

  1. Britain may have limited resources and cannot house, provide healthcare, and educate unlimited newcomers.
  2. Illegal immigration undermines the Committee of Law and must be stopped.
  3. The selective system will attract skilled workers who will make a real contribution to the UK.

National identity and social cohesion are important to preserve, and cultural integration, as opposed to celebrating segregation, will be important to do that.

Immigration in the Wider UK Political Debate

It is worth noting Reform UK is definitely not the only party thinking about immigration. Other major parties have immigration positions as well.

  1. Conservative: Supports controlled immigration but has received criticism over the past years for not reducing numbers.
  2. Labor: Has a greater emphasis on fairness and integration when it comes to immigration and tends to be more open to immigration.
  3. Liberal Democrat: Overall stance is supportive of immigration and diversity.
  4. Reform UK: Interested in sharp reductions and strict border control.

In summary, Reform UK appears to be much more hardline on immigration than the other major parties but is also addressing concerns that large segments of the voters feel are not being addressed.

The Media and the Immigration Debate

The media has a significant impact on the public’s thinking about immigration and Reform UK. Some papers and broadcasters focus on Reform UK’s comments and warnings about illegal immigration to hold them to account and balance with other parties, while other publications critique their stance as being too harsh.

For Reform UK, the media coverage on immigration can be a double-edged sword. Strong language surrounding immigration can attract attention, with measures gaining support from those worried about the security of borders. On the flip side, negative media coverage can present the party as intolerant or extreme.
