Sir Alexander Paul Beresford was born on 6 April 1946 in Levin, Horowhenua District of Manawatū-Whanganui, New Zealand. His family moved to Nelson at a very young age. He spent his childhood in Richmond. Therefore, he got enrolled at the primary school. Sir Paul attended Waimea College in Richmond before moving to the University of Otago in Dunedin.  After completing his studies he started practicing dentistry. He holds British and New Zealand citizenship.

A career in Local Government

Sir Alexander was successfully elected as the Councillor to Wandsworth Borough Council in 1978. He stayed as the Leader starting from 1983 to 1992. However, most of his duties were for the Thatcher Government. Due to his diligent behavior and hard work, he was knighted with the New Year honors for political and public services. His career in the Local government started well and he maintained a good position throughout. Along with his political career, he is practicing dentistry. However, he is practicing this as a part-time job.

Parliamentary Career

Alexander Paul was selected for the safe Conservative seat of Croydon Central. As the former Cabinet minister John Moore resigned he could take this position easily. Sir Paul was elected in the 1992 general elections and made an impressive maiden speech on June 30th. Moreover, he entered the major government in 1994. He became the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for the Environment. While he remained active in this position until he was defeated in 1997.

As the number of seats was reduced in Croydon from four to three he failed to be selected for an important position. Instead, he fought for the Safe Conservative Mole Valley seat in Surrey. This is where he had to compete against Kenneth Baker was retiring. However, he retired and was selected for the 1997 election. Croydon central fell before the general election.

While Paul remained on the member Communities & Local Government Select committee. In 2012, Paul was named one of the loyal Conservative backbench MPs. He didn’t want to vote against the government and become a rebel.

Referendum On EU Membership

Paul started a campaign during the 2016 referendum on EU membership. He firmly believed that this could be the best option for all future generations. Since 1997, he has served as a backbencher and has been successful in getting benefits from the private member’s bills. It was necessary for him to carefully choose the much-needed amendments to the Government legislation. This helped him achieve over ten different legal changes which made a big impact. His political ideas a liberal and focus heavily on the benefits of citizens. These ideas focus primarily on child protection which has been an issue for many decades. In 2021, he successfully introduced the private member’s bill.

Sir Paul got divorced and has a son from his previous marriage. His son lives in New Zealand but he makes sure that he gets the living expenses. Paul got the chance to get married again. His recent wife is named Julie and they have two sons and one daughter together. During the political crisis caused by Pincher Scandal, he announced that he has lost confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He firmly believes that the Prime Minister should resign from his position. His wife Julie is working as a part-time secretary.
