Lewisham (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Transport for London has introduced a temporary stopping ban on Lewisham High Street to ease traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety during peak hours.

The restriction is in place to make room for future water hookup projects.

The south-eastern kerb line of the high street, between its intersections with Ladywell Road and Legge Street, is subject to the no-stopping rule.

This will be in force from August 2 at 8 a.m. to August 3 at 5 p.m., or until the work is finished, whichever comes first.

The time and scope of the prohibition will be indicated by traffic signs.

According to TfL, cars used for the water works, as well as police, fire, and ambulance vehicles, would not be subject to the ban.

This also holds true for any car driven by a uniformed police constable or someone else approved by TfL.

The notice was sent on July 23 by TfL’s coordination manager, Andrew Ulph.

Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act of 1984 has been used to make the temporary order.

The order is intended to make it easier to install a new water connection on Lewisham High Street (A21).

The order will be marked by traffic signs and will only be in effect during specific times between the specified date and time.

Vehicles utilized for emergency services or the water works will not be impacted by the ban. For the length of the work, the no-stopping zone will be clearly delineated and enforced.

What prompted TfL to temporarily stop parking on Lewisham High Street?

TfL temporarily stopped parking on Lewisham High Street as part of a major £24 million regeneration project aimed at improving the town centre. The temporary stopping ban and traffic restrictions facilitate extensive resurfacing of the road and adjacent pavements while enabling public realm improvements to proceed smoothly and efficiently.

Specifically, the ban on northbound stopping and passing through parts of Lewisham High Street helps speed up construction works and manage traffic flow during this regeneration effort, which includes re-routing bus services and closing key bus stops temporarily.

The goal is to enhance the street environment and support the regeneration scheme that is scheduled to complete by spring 2025.
