TfL to axe Hammersmith and Fulham bus route despite massive opposition

Hammersmith and Fulham (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Transport for London will scrap the bus route linking Hammersmith and Fulham despite overwhelming opposition, prompting community protests and concerns.

The variations, which include the pullout of the 283 and the rerouting of the 72 and N72 to service the White City Estate, are listed to take effect on December 13. 

In a discussion conducted over the summer, only 4 of repliers were in favor of the suggestions, while 75 were against them. The impact on guests traveling to and from Hammersmith and Fulham Hospital, the loss of some direct connections to White City and Wood Lane stations, and the consequences for senior and vulnerable passengers were among the main issues brought up. 

The modifications “are necessary in reflecting the changing usage of routes by customers,” according to Geoff Hobbs, TfL’s Director of Public Transport Service Planning. However, he also stated that the network will continue to be reviewed to guarantee that a comprehensive offering is provided.

Although TfL admitted that some journey durations will increase, the rerouting of the 72 and N72 would guarantee that no stops are missed. While some residents told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) that the proposed changes would make some trips “almost untenable,” others stated they would not be significantly impacted as long as all stops are serviced.

Both the 72 and 283 run at a “high frequency” of six buses per hour, according to TfL’s study, and passengers typically don’t check the timetable before arriving at the stop. According to TfL, the suggested modifications will “rationalise and simplify the network while making savings to help meet financial targets” and aid in matching capacity to demand.

TfL stated that it entered 709 replies, 698 from the general public and 11 from stakeholders, in a report outlining the discussion feedback and its decision. Only 4 of those were positive, while 75 were negative, 13 were neutral, and 8 were mixed. 

Stakeholders who made representations included Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and original politicians. Removing the 283″ would drastically reduce availability to the sanitarium, especially given its distance from any Underground station and limited parking,” the Trust, which operates Hammersmith Hospital, advised. 

How will withdrawing route 283 affect journey times to central London?
