Adam Bryson raped two women in 2016 and 2019. He presented himself as Isla Bryson at the trial. She had been taking hormones for two years. She is now admitted to a women’s prison, awaiting the final sentence, estimated for February 28. The Scottish first minister supports her being in that prison. From London, government ministers ask for her transfer to another center.
At 4 years old, Adam realized that he liked to play with dolls and put on make-up. At that age he didn’t know exactly what that meant. Years later, he was accused of raping two women in 2016 and 2019. The first victim recalled repeatedly saying NO to her when her “muscular” attacker raped her after getting into the bed where she was sleeping. The second woman was raped in an apartment when they were planning to see a movie.
From Adam to Isla
When Bryson first appeared in Glasgow High Court, he was still a man. On the first day of his 6-year trial, he already arrived as Isla Bryson. He was taking hormones and was seeking surgery to complete the gender change. That change had begun in 2020, at age 29. Scotland passed Scottish Chief Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s gender recognition reform last December with the backing of Labor and the Liberal Democrats, which allowed anyone over the age of 16 to identify as the opposite sex without the need for a medical diagnosis.
A Controversial Law
On Monday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak blocked Sturgeon’s gender reforms after warnings from lawmakers that the reform could undermine women’s rights in Britain. Scottish law allowed people to apply for a gender recognition certificate after only 3 months of physical transformation without the need for medical evidence. Lawmakers warned that this could allow people who are biologically male to access women-only spaces such as locker rooms, gyms, or prisons and shelters for battered women, undermining current equality law protections that cover England and Wales as well like Scotland.
