UK, Canada and the Netherlands launch new Ukraine solidarity alliance

London, (Parliament Politics Magazine) – A historic solidarity pact has been launched by the leaders of the United Kingdom, Canada and the Netherlands in an effort to mobilise sustained support for Ukraine.

The International Ukraine Support Group will aim to bring together global powers who are committed to ensuring political, humanitarian, economic and defensive support for Ukraine. The alliance is part of the UK’s growing international pressure effort against the Russian federation after President Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February and aims to assist Ukraine’s defence.

As part of the initiative, the United Kingdom has pledged to send an additional £100 million in aid to the besieged nation, making the UK the most significant bilateral humanitarian donor to the Ukraine conflict. During today’s parliamentary press conference, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told journalists the following: “As Ukrainians resist Russia’s onslaught with courage and tenacity, the international community must aid their struggle in every way we can.

To aid these efforts, today the UK is joining our Dutch and Canadian friends to mobilise more practical and sustained support for Ukraine. This is the moment for Ukraine’s friends to create a coalition of humanitarian, economic and defensive military support to ensure that Putin fails.” The solidarity alliance comes as British Prime Minister Johnson continues to encourage European and NATO powers to increase military and humanitarian aid shipments to the war-torn Ukraine, which is continuing to mount a strong resistance against Russian forces.

The solidarity alliance will aim to mobilise further international allies in an effort to coordinate and reinvigorate assistance to Ukraine, with the goal being to ensure efforts are sustained in the long term. The leaders of the three primary nations are expected to encourage more countries to join over the next few days and the UK will be raising this with various international partners.
