Ukrainian strikes knock out power in Sevastopol

SEVASTOPOL, June 24 (Parliament Politics Magazine) – A significant wave of Ukrainian drone strikes crippled power infrastructure in Sevastopol, the largest city in Russian-held Crimea, on Wednesday.

The aerial operation, which targeted energy facilities deep within Russian territory, left major districts in the port city without electricity, according to local officials.

The strike on Sevastopol reportedly hit the main power substation, causing an immediate disruption to public services. Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-installed governor of the city, confirmed the blackout via the Telegram messaging app, noting that the incident forced the suspension of all trolleybus operations.

Governor Razvozhayev advised residents to keep children at home and remain cautious as crews worked to restore the grid. The outage adds to existing difficulties in the region, where authorities had already implemented restrictions on public transport and dimmed street lights to mitigate the impact of ongoing overnight attacks.

Widespread Aerial Campaign Across Russia

The operation in Crimea was part of a larger, coordinated effort by Ukrainian forces targeting energy and industrial sites across Russia. Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s drone forces, stated that the strikes were specifically aimed at the Sevastopol power plant’s main substation.

Simultaneous reports indicated that Russian air defenses were overwhelmed, with the Ministry of Defence claiming to have shot down 323 drones across multiple regions overnight. In the central Nizhny Novgorod region, Governor Gleb Nikitin reported that falling debris from a downed drone struck an industrial facility. Two people were killed in the incident, though the governor noted that the industrial facility did not suffer critical damage.

Further east, in the Orenburg region, authorities tracked drones near an industrial complex located over 1,000 kilometers from Moscow. While the extent of damage in that area remained unclear, the facility is known for housing oil and gas infrastructure. Kazakhstan’s energy ministry confirmed that gas supplies in the region were being maintained through alternative transport routes.

Government Response to Fuel Shortages

The intensification of these strikes has placed significant strain on Russia’s domestic fuel market. Moscow’s parliament moved quickly on Wednesday to address growing shortages that have affected numerous regions. Lawmakers approved amendments to the Tax Code designed to stabilize supply by allowing the use of lower-quality fuel in gasoline production and delaying mandatory equipment modernizations at major refineries.

Ukraine has explicitly stated that its long-range drone strategy is intended to disrupt the funding sources behind Russia’s ongoing conflict. By targeting refineries, depots, and logistics chains, Kyiv aims to demonstrate that the war is having tangible consequences on the Russian mainland.

Despite these developments, the push to maintain essential services continues. Addressing the situation in Crimea, Razvozhayev remarked on the ongoing challenges faced by local residents.

“Kyiv is trying to deprive us of our normal living conditions and sow panic,” Razvozhayev said.

The human cost of these operations has been felt on both sides of the border. In the Russian-held Ukrainian city of Horlivka, three people died when an apartment building entrance collapsed during an overnight drone strike. Additionally, in the Russian border region of Belgorod, one man was killed and a woman injured. In the eastern Ukrainian city of Balakliia, local authorities reported that one person died following Russian shelling on Wednesday.
