Working asynchronously: the new trend?

LONDON (Parliament Politics Magazine): In principle, you can telecommute wherever you want but not always whenever you want. Nevertheless, many tasks can be performed perfectly outside “office hours”. Will asynchronous work become the new trend?

Change

Since the corona crisis, more and more employees are discovering the benefits of teleworking and hybrid working . The days when you dutifully brave the traffic jams to the office every morning already seem a thing of the past. The autonomy, the flexible arrangement of one’s own work planning and the relative tranquility of the domestic work environment ensure an improved work-life balance for many employees. However, it can be even more drastic.

Happy and efficient

What if you like to work at your own pace and according to your own ideal daily schedule? What if you are most productive in the evening or even at night and not during “office hours” (which you would rather fill in with me-time or quality time with the family)? Asynchronous working goes a step further than current teleworking and can ensure a happy and efficient professional lifestyle for many employees.

Independent

The daily routine of teleworking together from 9 to 5 provides a predictable and recognisable feeling. The fixed “office hours” also make it easy to communicate with colleagues and the manager, as everyone is working synchronously in the same time block.

Yet in some cases you can work more productively and efficiently if you do not work time-dependently and synchronously. With asynchronous working, just like with teleworking, you are no longer dependent on the office location, but also no longer on the “office hours”. When you do not necessarily have to work together with your colleagues for your work assignment, this means that you decide where, how and especially when you perform your task.

New way of working

In an asynchronous work environment, online meetings and contact moments are only scheduled when it is really necessary. As a result, there is more time and space to focus on a project or objective at the location of your choice.

A common platform ( Google Drive , Cloud, etc.) is an ideal online tool which ensures that the work done can be easily shared and synchronized with colleagues or managers, regardless of time.

This way of working offers you a lot of freedom as an employee, but it does require the necessary discipline, independence and a sense of responsibility.
