What support is being offered to the victim’s family by police?
In instances like the Southwark killing, the victim’s family is usually offered extensive help from police and accompanying victim support services.
If a victim’s family is enrolled in a victim support service, the service is generally responsible for offering ongoing support, updating the family regarding the progress of the police investigation and court case, and aiding the family through the process of the criminal justice system.
Support may include providing the family with clear information regarding court dates, victims’ rights, and how to submit a victim impact statement. Some services offer professional counseling or mental health services to help families cope with grief and trauma.
Support may also include linking or coordinating families to charitable organizations, community groups, and social services that can offer the needed support.
