Abbott was born in Paddington, London, in 1953. She was born into a Jamaican family. Her father was a welder and her mother was a nurse. The black politician left school at the age of 14. She attended Harrow County School for Girls (a grammar school) and went to Newnham College, Cambridge later. She read history and achieved a lower second-class degree (2:2).
At Cambridge, Abbott was tutored by historian Simon Schama. She is known for having been the country’s first black Member of Parliament, having been elected in 1987. Abbott was reelected in the House of Commons during June 2017 snap general election. After Keir Starmer had replaced Corbyn as Labour leader Abbott stepped down and no longer remained a home secretary.
