Tehran unveiled two new air defense systems on Saturday: the Arman anti-ballistic missile system and the Azarakhsh low-altitude air defense system. The announcement was made by state media amid heightened tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
According to the official IRNA news agency, the Arman system has a medium range and high altitude capability, able to detect targets up to 180 kilometers away and engage them at 120 kilometers. It is designed to target up to six threats simultaneously. The Azarakhsh system can be mounted on various vehicles and uses radar, electro-optical systems, and thermal seekers for target detection and tracking.
This unveiling comes as the Israel-Iran conflict, fueled by Tehran’s support for Hamas, continues to escalate. Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons despite ongoing Israeli opposition to its nuclear program. The recent conflict has seen increased attacks on U.S. and coalition troops in the region, including a deadly strike on a base in Jordan earlier this year and persistent attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on commercial shipping.
