Health Minister Mike Nesbitt condemns Northern Ireland disorder during a press conference

BELFAST, June 14 (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Health Minister Mike Nesbitt stated recent violent street disorder is a stain on Northern Ireland’s reputation locally, nationally, and internationally. The political leader made these comments following consecutive days of violent demonstrations, arson, and riots across the region.

The unrest erupted following a knife attack in north Belfast where a local resident lost an eye. Authorities subsequently charged Sudanese national Hadi Alodid with attempted murder, noting he entered Northern Ireland via Dublin in February 2023 and held leave to remain until 2028. Online amplification of the incident triggered widespread anti-immigrant rioting across Belfast, Portadown, and County Antrim.

Minister Nesbitt emphasized that the targeting of healthcare professionals threatens the sustainability of essential public services. He noted that the international attention surrounding the harassment of medical staff directly damages the global standing of the region.

He said: “I am told that the mum is a nurse…That’s why what happened is a stain on Northern Ireland’s reputation locally, nationally, and internationally.”

The street violence led to severe disruptions within the local healthcare network, including the cancellation of dozens of surgeries at Belfast’s Mater Hospital. Mobs targeted minority communities and healthcare staff, setting houses, cars, and a bus on fire. Overseas medical staff reported navigating past rioters at barricades to reach shifts, raising serious concerns over employee safety.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson condemned the intimidation, describing doctors, nurses, and carers as the backbone of public service. Minister Nesbitt highlighted the region’s reliance on international staff, noting that without them, the health system would collapse. He specifically referenced widely shared video footage showing a nurse and her family being escorted into a police vehicle after being targeted.Police Service of Northern Ireland officers deployed water cannons in County Antrim after rioters pelted authorities with bricks and set a department vehicle on fire. The violence resulted in injuries to 12 police officers on Wednesday evening, though officials noted a de-escalation of tensions by Thursday night. Police confirmed 23 individuals were arrested over the disorder, with more arrests anticipated.

In response to the rioting, an estimated 3,000 citizens gathered for a Together Against Hate rally outside Belfast City Hall on Saturday afternoon. Organizers described the demonstration as the largest anti-racism gathering seen in Belfast, with participants chanting slogans welcoming refugees. Political figures, including Sinn Féin Lord Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly, attended the protest to show solidarity with targeted groups.
