Wandsworth (Parliament Politics Magazine) – Wandsworth Council doubles rubbish and recycling collections for residents in town centre flats, boosting cleanliness and community standards.

Wandsworth‘s Cleaner Borough Plan, which aims to improve recycling and garbage services and make streets cleaner to help residents feel proud of their areas, recently increased the frequency of collections for apartments above stores in major town centres from once to twice a week.

It comes after broader advancements like:

  • Weekly collections for every other residence are assured.
  • Every household receives two complimentary bulky waste collections per year, which have already generated over 17,500 reservations.
  • Much cherished Mega Skip Days grew into other places and quadrupled to twice a month so that even more individuals could utilize them.
  • Additional cleaning in crowded town centers

Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:

“As a listening council, we’ve heard residents in flats above shops when they’ve told us they struggle with limited bin space.

This new service gives them an extra collection day, making life easier while helping keep our streets clean for everyone.

It’s another step forward in our Cleaner Borough Plan, and we’re proud to offer it while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.”

Since June 2024, the council has collected almost 8,000 tonnes of extra recycling thanks to residents’ hard work and the Cleaner Borough Plan.

Which streets in Wandsworth get the extra collection days?

Wandsworth Council has not released a designated list of streets where the flats above shops will receive the extra rubbish and recycling collection days. The residents who live in these flats have been directly told by the council about their additional collection day and posters are being posted on lampposts along the relevant high street to provide additional information.

Wandsworth Council recommends their online tool for residents to find waste and recycling collection days by entering their postcode on the council’s website.

This method enables the council to target additional collection service to busy town centre streets where there are flats above shops, where the council does not want or need to publicly list all of those streets, while still being able to communicate directly with those affected.
