What specific impacts does financial strain have on young children’s development in Kingston?

Children of all ages who are under financial stress typically have worse general health and more behavioral issues. This involves a higher chance of mental health issues including depression and developmental difficulties, particularly as they age.

Parents who are struggling financially are less able to spend money on things like wholesome food, educational tools, and stimulating surroundings that support healthy growth. Children’s academic performance and cognitive abilities may suffer as a result.

Parental stress brought on by financial instability lowers the standard and consistency of parenting. Financially stressed parents may be less affectionate, watchful, and emotionally available, which can result in inconsistent or harsh parenting and have a detrimental effect on kids’ social-emotional growth and behavior control.

The regular, constructive connections (proximal processes) that are vital between children and caregivers might be disrupted by income uncertainty.
