ÉVIAN-LES-BAINS, June 17 (Parliament Politics Magazine) – The United States and President Donald Trump have pivoted their approach toward the war in Ukraine, adopting a position that other G7 leaders view as more realistic regarding the conflict, according to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Carney shared these insights on Wednesday during the G7 summit held in Évian-les-Bains, France. The Prime Minister stated that he engaged in seven or eight separate discussions with President Trump over the past 36 hours to cover various geopolitical and economic topics.
According to Carney, the updated U.S. framework for the conflict is now more closely aligned with the physical realities observed on the battlefield. This shift includes a strengthened stance against Russia, increased enforcement of international sanctions, and continued support for defensive military capabilities within Kyiv.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed similar sentiments during the summit, noting that the U.S. administration and European leaders have reached a common baseline regarding the war. G7 officials are currently reviewing potential frameworks that would allow for the manufacturing of interceptor missiles directly inside Ukraine.
Regarding diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, Carney described a developing memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran as a significant “game changer” for regional stability.
During the summit, Carney also provided updates on Canadian economic priorities. He noted that President Trump expressed approval of the structure regarding Canada’s cap on Chinese electric vehicles. Additionally, the Canadian government remains on track to produce 150 megatons of liquefied natural gas by the end of the year. Carney also confirmed that his administration intends to finalize a trade deal with India by the G20 summit in November.
