UK (Parliament Politic Magazine) – Rishi Sunak extends congratulations to President Aliyev of Azerbaijan, emphasizing bilateral relations, energy cooperation, and regional stability efforts

Rishi Sunak has congratulated the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on his confident success in the presidential election.

In his letter, Risihi Sunak said: “Dear President Aliyev, “I offer my best wishes as you begin your new term as the Republic of Azerbaijan president. For more than 30 years, the relationship between our two governments has gone from strength to strength. Over the last twelve months alone, we have supported Ukraine, held our Strategic Dialogue in London, shared expertise on mine clearance, and continued to build our trade relationship.

“2024 has extra significance for Azerbaijan as you prepare to host COP29 in November. This is a vital moment to drive forward energy transitions and reduce global emissions. I am delighted that we are already offering our support and expertise as hosts of COP26 and assure you of our ongoing commitment to assist you in delivering a successful COP29.

“I am also aware of the efforts to achieve peace with Armenia. This is a historic opportunity to end the conflict. I appreciate the vast benefits of a lasting agreement for the prosperity and stability of both countries and the wider region. Let me reiterate the United Kingdom’s steadfast support for your countries in finding a pathway to permanent peace.

“I wish you every success in your new term and look forward to working with you to strengthen our partnership further,” the Prime Minister noted.

Last year, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak contended in his address to the 10th Global Baku Forum participants that British specialists will continue to support Azerbaijan in demining its territories. British Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld read out the address. Rishi Sunak stated that British specialists will continue to work with the Azerbaijani side to free the territories from mines and unexploded ordnance. The prime minister expressed that the UK will continue to support Azerbaijan as the country adheres to a progressive and independent course for the coming years.

Moreover, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak also sent a congratulatory letter to the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on May 28, Independence Day.

Rishi Sunak noted, “I wish you the best for the Baku Energy Week. With the pressing twin challenges of tackling climate change and strengthening energy security, Baku Energy Week’s ability to convene international thought leaders from the public and private sectors has never been more critical.

“Azerbaijan’s role as a reliable energy partner is essential in the global energy landscape. Azerbaijan’s commitment to increase its natural gas reserves to Europe by 20 billion cubic meters by 2027 already contributes to Europe’s energy security. Diversity of supply is crucial in ending Russia’s use of energy as a geopolitical weapon.

“I also commend your efforts to develop Azerbaijan’s substantial renewable energy prospect and become a green energy exporter. Your goals to expand cooperation on energy transition with European allies will be vital to achieving these goals. Establishing the first Green Energy Advisory Council of the Southern Gas Corridor and the Black Sea Submarine cable scheme, which aims to transmit renewable electricity from Azerbaijan to Europe, are particularly promising.”
